The difficulty level of 5 was justified. It's not for the casual walker or the faint hearted. It's a hard trek up to Sas Campiac and, if anything, a long and taxing descent. We didn't have walking sticks - they would have made the descent easier. It was extremely satisfying experience though, one I'll remember for a long time. Egon was an excellent guide, full of humour. The food and drink at the hutte at the bottom of the descent was greatly enjoyed.
Wonderful guide and event. As an aside, I would have loved to know a little more of the history if the area, when the peaks were first conquered, those who live on the upper plateau community etc. But none of that should attract from a guide being incredibly thoughtful, engaging and personable. All credits to him.
We arrived late on a Saturday, and decided to start off with a free guided hike with Val Gardena Active (free for those staying at participating hotels and B&Bs) to ease into our Dolomite adventures. Egon was a knowledgable local guide who led the ten of us on a medium hike up to a couple of Rifugios - for coffee, then lunch - and improvised and took us down a different route to be able to check out a festival in the Vallunga, before heading back to town. To days later, we joined up on a difficult hike over the Puez Odle altiplano. Again, very nice to have a guide leading the way, and fantastic vistas, good food and a beer at our lunch destination, and a great price. Val Gardena Active is a fantastic service if you're staying in Selva!
Val Gardena Active offer a wide range of activities in and around the mountains and valley of Gardena. The guides are excellent and really bring something extra to hiking in the area. There are all types of activities on offer from mountain biking, climbing, hiking, photography for all different levels. They are knowledgable and you can learn something new on every trip. In particular, I really appreciated the “technical pitstop” at a nice mountain hut for a quick cup of coffee in the morning. My thanks to Antonio who shared is love for the mountains and made every trip a delight.
Strongly recommend at least taking a leaflet away to look at!Helpful though probably don't get that many English speaking tourists so I probably wasn't the easiest to deal with! Sorry. If you're in a partner hotel you can do some guided walks for free and possibly get a bus pass from your hotel (NOT skibus pass)Would advise diving into tourist info for leaflets + maps then taking a walk over to Active as there's loads to do from helicopter tours to cooking classes throughout the week.Prices were great for what's on offer.Thank you very much!
The trip to Vallunga was wonderful. The valley looked so pristine and beautiful after last night’s fresh snowfall. Our guide went above and beyond to help make the trip as interesting as possible. He is so enthusiastic about the area and the nature, and brought lots of props including a telescope and a wildlife book to make sure we got the best out of the day. Not to mention producing a wonderful flask of herbal tea! Thank you again for a memorable day in the Dolomites! ?
Sandra was an excellent guide. She took great interest in our safety and well being and nothing was too much trouble. She took the time to explain local history and culture to us, which we found most interesting, having not been to this part of Italy before. The visit to the farm was a highlight and the owners were very friendly and the dessert they served us was really delicious. We both thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Anna is an unflappable and super professional teacher of South Tyrolean cuisine. She had prepared everything for us but also allowed us to help knead the dough for the strudel and to make the bales de spinot. The food was excellent. I also loved her farmhouse and all the things in her kitchen.
This is the 1st time to try cross country skiing. I really enjoyed it & will do it more often now, the price was great €30 for 2 hours including equipment, but what really impressed everyone on the day was there was a 86 year old woman also with us she was amazing she never stopped for the 2 hours, she was a real inspiration.
Very well organised, clear instructions and the guide (Daniel) checked regularly that we were ok, was informative and pointed out different points of interest. The young lady in the Active office in Selva was particularly helpful and friendly and went out of her way to provide us with information needed for meeting the guide.
